by Ambassador SAMEH DERAR at the constituting assembly May 1999
Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
First of all I would like to welcome each and everyone to this Embassy and to the Statutory Meeting of the Swedish Egyptian Society.
As many of you know, the Swedish Egyptian Society has existed since many years, but, for various reasons, has been dormant since some time.
Our objective is to revive its activities and make it at least as active as its counterpart in Egypt, the Egyptian Swedish Society.
The purpose of this Society is to develop and strengthen the social, cultural, and scientific exchanges between our two countries.
This embassy, and its staff, can and shall provide every assistance possible to achieve that objective.
The first effort we have made to promote the rebirth of the society has been to invite the famous Egyptologist Dr Zahi Hawas who gave a series of three lectures, one for H. M. the King at the Royal Palace, the second at the Historical Museum and the last one at Uppsala University, in January this year.
However, no amount of efforts that we can make can replace the active membership of each and every one of you. And an active membership means more than the payment of your membership fee, although this is of course a good and welcome start!
Today’s program will start with our formal meeting and the items on the
agenda sent to you earlier.
After which, We shall welcome two of our future members who will express their
fondness of Egypt with a musical performance.
Refreshments and a light snack will be served after their performance.
I would now like to suggest to start with the first point on the Agenda, the election of the President of the Statutory Meeting. Mr Peter Hammargren, well known to many of you and ex president of the International Club has been suggested to preside.
I guess we are all in agreement, in which case I would like to invite Mr Peter Hammargren to take over the Chair.
THANK YOU
